This is a quite big lot, not a big house. The house has two floors with a hall, a bathroom, a kitchen with dining area, a big porch outside the kitchen (for summer dinners), a big living room, two bedrooms for four people and a pet and two big wardrobes for storage. Besides, there are a huge garden and a smaller beach.

The rooms both have double sized beds, pillows sheets and some closet space for hanging your clothes. The kitchen is equipped with a stove, freezer, microwave, coffee maker, dishware and utensils. The bathroom is found between the 2 bedrooms which is really nice and clean. There is a sink, and mirror. The shower bath is lined with brown tiles and glass bricks. Kehena Makai is an oceanfront vacation rental home located in the village of Kehena, Hawaii, which is just a small coastal community on the southeast flank of the Big Island, very near the community of Kalapana. Kehena Makai is neatly decorated with an island theme and has a personal, home-y feel to it and glows with comforting warmth.
When they say oceanfront here, they reeeeeally mean it! The churning white water created from the blue Pacific Ocean thrashing upon the black volcanic rock is literally an easy stone’s toss from the back door. However, anyone with half a brain would know not to swim here due to all that rough surf and jagged rock. You can save the swimming for the cute, calm, black sand beach just a short walk down the street.
The owners, Susanna and John Billings, made it so easy to make the reservation via the Internet. We were in constant contact with them via email during the entire process. They were always responsive and happy to answer questions.
The kitchen was well stocked with all dishes, utensils, and such. It also has all the appliances you could need.
Each bedroom is a master suite with each located on opposite sides of the house. Each has a double bed facing a large window filled with an expansive view of the deep blue Pacific Ocean.
Each bathroom has a large, tiled, walk-in shower. The vanities in each are tiled, with one covered in a marble-like tile while the other appears to be ceramic tile. Each has a fancy European-style glass vessel sink.
The bathrooms were nicely cleaned and had plenty of towels.
There was plenty more of the stuff in the downstairs storage room that you could imagine needing while on vacation. In addition to the washer and drier, you can take your pick from boogie boards, snorkeling gear, beach chairs & mats, and more for a day at the beach. And the closest beach, a cute little black sand beach filled with coconut palms, is just a short walk down the street.
But what you will enjoy most about staying here is experiencing a relaxing afternoon on the lanai. Sitting there, watching the coconut palms just off the lanai sway in the breeze with the crashing surf just beyond, was quite refreshing. The backdrop to all of this was the deep blue Pacific Ocean. And with the occasional afternoon rain shower comes the chance of a rainbow, of which we saw several. All of this just screams TROPICAL ESCAPE at you. Just kick back, pop the cap on that cold bottle of your favorite Mehana Brewing beer (I liked their Humpback Blue best), and enjoy!
Like all quirky things our home brings us, there were a few things at Kehena Makai, too. Between the satellite TV not receiving signal, the DSL Internet connection not maintaining steady service, and the hot water requiring a trick to get it flowing, we had a few laughs and realized that those things happen. These little things just did not out-weigh all of the other wonderful aspects of this home.
However, we did encounter a most unique aspect of any previous vacation here in Hawaii. Our stay was interrupted a tsunami.
On the morning of Feb 27, 2010 (our first morning), there was frantic knock at the door. It was 4am and I was a little startled. I hesitantly inquired, Yes? A lady responded, Have you been watching the news? I told her that the satellite TV was not working and she said, “Theres a tsunami warning and we have to evacuate.”
I then opened the door to speak face to face. I extended my hand, smiled, and introduced myself. She responded with her name. As it turned out, she was the next door neighbor. She said she knew we were vacation renters and just wanted to make sure we knew what was going on.
After thanking her for the important information, I went back inside and got on my laptop. I accessed one of the local news station websites and, sure enough, she was correct. I even went as far as checking the linked evacuation zones and this house was in the target zone.
We still had several hours, so we started packing all our stuff up and putting it in the car. We took all our stuff. Even the owners called. They just wanted to make sure we were evacuating. We headed inland and up, ending up at Volcano National Park. We spent the day there.
As it turned out, the tsunami was dud and we went on with our vacation. Had it caused mass devastation, Im sure the State would have asked that all tourists leave the islands. A Video Tour Of The Sunset Beach House, Oahu’s Favorite Vacation Rental Home. Located directly on the sand at exotic Sunset Beach, on the world famous North Shore of Oahu, Hawaii.
My home is directly on the sand at Sunset Beach, on the main island of Oahu, about 1,000 feet down from Pipeline, one of the world’s most famous surfing spots.
The beach in front of my house is gorgeous and is hardly used as there is no public access to it close to my home. The water is crystal clear and the snorkeling is great!
The home has 4 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms and is perfect for parties of up to 8 people with comfort and ease. There is a Jacuzzi on the deck overlooking the beach and my own private volleyball/badminton court is right along side the house, as you can see in the aerial shot on my web page.
The house is only a 7-8 minute drive from the historic whaling town of Haleiwa, which is the main town on the north shore of Oahu. It has lots of restaurants, shopping, a marina (in case you would like to go deep sea fishing), and live entertainment is abundant in many of the restaurants and bars. The Turtle Bay Hilton is about 5 miles away from the house in the other direction, and they have 2 golf courses, horseback riding, and a disco. There is a Foodland supermarket about 1/2 mile from the house. All the island activities, from hang gliding to scuba diving, and polo matches to jet skis are all just minutes away from my house.
For your viewing pleasure the living room has a 46 Flatscreen HDTV featuring all the movie channels with stereo DVD, and there are Flatscreen TV/DVDs in all the bedrooms. The home also has digital security and an electronic safe for your valuables.
In addition to the 3 inside baths there is a hot and cold 2 headed shower at the bottom of the deck which is hidden by foliage, and is everybody’s favorite place to shower and refresh after coming off the beach or after a long soak in the spa.
The kitchen is custom crafted in local island Koa hardwood & has every appliance you can think of, and of course there is a Telephone, High speed DSL Wireless Internet (Wifi), Free Long Distance, iron, and all the other items you would find in your own home.
The water is crystal clear and the snorkeling is great. SCUBA diving is a major attraction on the north shore with both boat and shore dives available. Waimea Falls is only a mile away, and hiking at Waimea Valley is an unforgettable experience.
