“CHILD FRIENDLY” We spent the day at the ALOHA STADIUM SWAP MEET. It’s a $1.00 per person to get in and it’s opened 3 days a week. WED,SAT 8am-3pm & SUN 6:30-3pm. PLEASE NOTE: UH WARRIOR Football season. If there is a HOME game there will be no SWAP MEET on SAT. This place is a local Favorite where we all go to get CHEAP EVERYTHING. There is so much S#!* here I won’t even start to tell you about it! All I can say is if you come to Hawaii and don’t come here you really only screwed yourself. This is the best place to come for getting yourself keep sakes of Hawaii and the BEST place to get everyone from home something from Hawaii without braking the Bank. Now there is a BIG problem that I noticed with people visiting the Islands. If you are staying in Waikiki you seem to FORGET all about the SWAP MEET at ALOHA STADIUM and head right over to THE INTERNATIONAL MARKETPLACE in Waikiki. The problem with this is they have half the amount of things the STADIUM has and they are TWICE the PRICE for the same STUFF! Why is this? Think about it. Being in the PRIME LOCATION of WAIKIKI I can’t imagine the price it must cost for the venders at the Marketplace! They have to charge you more for the same items sold at the Aloha Stadium. It’s just a no brainer but it’s not a no brainer for you! You go to the ALOHA STADIUM, period! I do want to make one NOTE: Getting to the Stadium may seem easy but taking the H1 highway to the Stadium isn’t so easy and there is one place where you could go the wrong way so please do a google search and know exactly which off ramp to get off at. All the information you could possible have on the SWAP MEET is on their website. -Obama’s round trip flight to Hawaii: $1 million (Source: GAO estimate)
- Beachfront home rentals for Secret Service and Navy Seals in Kailua ($1,200 a day for 14 days): $16,800
-White House staff accommodations at Moana Hotel: $134,400 ($400 per day for staff of 44 people—does not include meals)
-Police overtime: $250,000 (Source: Honolulu Police Department)
- Ambulance on stand-by: $10,000 (Source: Honolulu City Spokesperson)
TOTAL COST: $1,474,200
However, the above figure does not include several other costs, such the rental of an office building in Kailua for White House staff, additional phone lines, car rentals and fuel and surveillance and security costs incurred ahead of the president’s visit.
The following commentary on how Obama could have saved the taxpayers a few dollars, recently appeared in The Hawaii Reporter:
“They could have chosen a less expensive and more secure place to stay such as a beachfront home on the Kaneohe Marine Corps Air Station – just a two-minute drive away from the Kailuana Place property where they are now.
The president visits the military base daily to workout, bowl with his kids or enjoy the more private beach there. He also could have stayed at a home 15 minutes away on the beach fronting Bellows Air Force Base as President Bill Clinton did.”
With one in five Americans out of work, record foreclosures, record bankruptcies and a soaring national debt…it is downright shameful for this president to be treated to such luxuries at the expense of the taxpaying public.

To make a long story short, I’ve applied for a job with TSA (Transportation Security Administration) in Lanai City airport in Hawaii. At first that was more like a joke decision, which I came up with while applying to other law enforcement jobs (that’s the field that I’m planning to go into and what I’ve gone to college for). But then I began wondering. What is it like to actually live in Hawaii? Should I be looking forward to actually getting a job there? They add locality pay as well, which makes the starting minimum salary of $32,000+.
I’m originally from Eastern Europe and have lived in the U.S. for almost 9 years. Most of that time in lived in Illinois, and only a year ago I moved to Georgia. So, I’m just wondering – what is it like? Does it feel that you’re living on a island? If so, why and how? Are some kinds of produce more expensive than in the continental U.S., or are vehicles more expensive? What about housing? And what about all the sea storms and tsunamis? Does that happen a lot? Are there any shortages of certain kinds of produce or other goods in Hawaii? Obviously, we’re going to get vaccinated for certain tropical illnesses and stuff…
To me, the State of Hawaii, if you cannot actually see the ocean, is just like any continental state, with all the latests technologies and goods. Am I correct in that assumption or not? And if not, why?
Not to offend anybody, but I’m looking for more responses from people who actually live or have lived in Hawaii for a while. If you went there on vacation, blowing a couple hundred bucks each day – that’s fine, but I’m more interested in what it’s like to live there. To reside there… for several years… should I look forward to making Hawaii my home, even for couple of years? Me and my fiance (she’s also from Western Europe) are actually considering the option of moving there for a while, and then after a few years I will try and transfer back to the Continental U.S. within TSA. Or, we may decide to stay… we’re totally clueless at that point, and I haven’t even gotten the offer and I’m not even sure that I will. At that point it’s more like a question of interest. But your answers may help us a lot, so, please, be serious in responding, and I appreciate you taking time to reply…

I’ve lived in Hawaii all my life, born and raised. Firstly, housing is pretty bad. But if you can make a lot of money, you can get some really beautiful houses. Hawaii is a lot different from the rest of America. Being an island, it can sometimes be pretty isolated. Obviously you can’t leave the state without getting on a plane. Hawaii also isn’t like any other state because of it’s unique history and culture. Hawaii was owned by the Native Hawaiians where they were happily living until they were illegally and unwillingly annexed and became a state. Before that, Hawaii let immigrants from Asia into Hawaii to work on the plantations, and many of them stayed, making us a very diverse state with a really unique culture. Tsunamis don’t happen very often, as we are situated so far in the middle of the ocean that hurricanes and tsunamis usually die out before they reach here. The last real one was Hurricane Iniki which was 18 years ago.When it comes to prices, as long as you don’t go to "tourist" stores ( such as in Waikiki) prices can be okay. Last thing, if you are white, get ready to become a minority! That might be an interesting experience..

White people do that but hey, I love a lot of white people. You know, the small population of non-racist ones? Man, I miss those Hawaiians. They’re so nice and their food is awesome.
She’s going with her sister and her parents. I am staying home with the kids. I travel a lot for work and this seemed like a good way to give her a break. I’m also looking forward to ten days of bossing my own self around the house.
I’d like to get her something unique… nothing fancy or expensive, no gold jewelry, nothing boring like suntan lotion or gift certificates for the hotel spa. Something else. What???????
