I’m planning on going to Hawaii with my family -wife and daughter- sometime next year. My wife born there but she was raised here in Argentina and she wants to go back to her motherland.
We are planning on staying for 6 months – at least.
So two questions:
1- How much does an average 2 bedroom beach-near house rental costs? long term lease not vacations.
I didn’t find any good site to check this. It doesn’t have to be something fancy at all.
2- What is the average cost of living in hawaii?
I know it varies in each island.
I would appreciate if any resident could give me some good advices.
Thanks!
pd: Just in case, I know this site http://www.to-hawaii.com/ and it didn’t provide significant help on this regard.
Cost living calculators I’ve seen only work while comparing US cities.
It would be good if a local can tell me: I spend around xxxx$ in food a month. Or I live Ok with an xxxx$ wage.
Hey Paco, welcome to Hawaii, bro. Here some figures, ok? All houses "near" beach, on island after all, but closer to beach means more money for house, ok? So lets say you looking for bargain, on Oahu, try Pearl City, 2 bedroom house, on 1 year lease, gonna cost 2 K to 3 K a month, depend on area, ok? Remember, every small area land on Island have own name, just the way we do it here bro, so get map show different areas, like Wakikik, or Manoa, or Kahala, or Kailua, or Hawaii Kai, listing for house gonna include neighborhood it in. So, go to classified of Honolulu Advertiser, they always have listings for what you want, ok? Also, Craigs List, good for cheaper rentals, just be sure you look at before you rent, cause there some real dumps, yeah?
Food nother item, bro. Depend on what you like eat, ok? I have friends from Argentina, they eat lots rice, beans, some chicken, not lot pork or beef, so they maybe eat cheaper than others, yeah? My family small, 4 people, like simple things, not lot fancy stuff, talking bout fried rice, some beans, noodles, local eggs, produce, not too proud eat spam, cheaper cuts meat and chicken also, also have garden, eat local fruit and buy in bulk Sam’s Club, those things, ok? Eat fish when we get on sale, too. We make it fine 150 bucks a week for food, 4 people, but remember everything more expensive Hawaii, cause not grow many staples here, ok? And we have one person stay home, cook and prepare food, so cheaper than most, ok? Other than that, pretty much same as most places, yeah? Cept, you gonna love Hawaii, bro, and great to have you wife back home.
Good luck to you and your family and Peace and Aloha for Hawaii.
PS, not important to me if people not like way I speak, ok? Even so called "educators", ok? I not impressed with them or their opinion of me or way I talk and write, so ok with me if they don’t like, or if they grouchy person, I just enjoy life and thankful I live Hawaii, yeah?

Since becoming First Lady nineteen months ago, Michelle Obama has vacationed overseas in Paris, London, Copenhagen and Marbella. She still has a family vacation booked to Indonesia and Australia that has been twice postponed this year because of her husband’s incompetence and rudeness. She also vacationed in Los Angeles this year, sans her husband, sitting in a luxury box for an NBA championship game and visiting a private beach owned by a billionaire.
Barack and Michelle Obama have also vacationed across America from Hawaii to Maine, with stays at a $4,000 rental home in Hawaii, Martha’s Vineyard (with a second trip there later this month) taken over 300 rooms at a Montana resort, traveled through Western National Parks, two Chicago vacation weekends, one weekend vacation each in North Carolina and Maine (with a Florida weekend planned next week) and the infamous date night in New York City.
When the Obamas don’t feel like traveling the world, they bring the world to them at taxpayer expense, including a pizza chef from St. Louis and all kinds of performers for their White House parties.
Michelle Obama works harder than any First Lady in recent memory, and if she can afford to take herself and her family on vacations, I see nothing wrong with that. Remember the Reagans and the china kerfuffle, and all the Bush perks? If anything, Michelle Obama is more restrained in her use of public funds than any First Lady since Rosalyn Carter, and 26 assistants to promote childhood health, personal growth and well-being is hardly a problem in my book. Her husband is neither incompetent nor rude; these are good, principled people doing their level best to make a valuable contribution as best they can, and I applaud their efforts in the face of what seems like dauntingly difficult situations they inherited from Dubya. Quit carping and lend a hand – it’s easy to be a critic – not quite so easy to get off our duffs and actually DO something.

A friend and I are looking to open a Jet ski rental business in either Miami, Florida or Honolulu, Hawaii. My question is are there Marinas or areas that we could rent from along the Beach without paying a lease, and if not, how might we go about finding land along the beach to Lease and operate from.
THANKS
I’m glad to see that you want to work for yourselves, but NOBODY is going to give you space without a lease. Especially in the high rent areas that you want to operate in. Then once you’ve resolved the space issue, be ready for the HIGH cost of insurance for the watercrafts and liability. It’s a very risky business to operate. There are also permits, license fees, storage, security of your watercrafts, etc. Then you’ll need at least a dozen watercrafts to even look like a business. At $12k per unit you’d be looking at $150k just for the rides. I wish you a lot of luck. Few of these businesses actually make it to the second year of business due to the high cost of doing business and the risks/damages done to the crafts.
Enjoy the aloha of Maui while staying in beautiful Kihei Hawaii 3 blocks up from Kamaole III beach, one of a string of beautiful sunny beaches along the coast very near the resort area of Wailea. What you need to do is to contact the owner of the beach and explain what you need and what kind of funds you have to work with. They will set up some kind of arrangement with you. If you don’t know who owns the beach then contact the city and they will help you.

I live in southern CA and have vacationed many times on the beaches here, as well as northern Californa, Hawaii and Mexico. I love the Pacific Ocean but would enjoy a cottage eastern Atlantic Ocean vacation. I have thought about Maine, Connecticut, etc. I really need your help. I want the experience of "lobstering," light houses, clam bakes, etc. Please suggest specific cottages, vacation spots, houses…. I need a small place-for 2. I have checked out VRBO (vacation rentals by owners) but was hoping that someone could share where they have been. Word of mouth suggestions are usually best. Thanks for your time!
Do a search of the Bar Harbor, Maine area. It has what you are describing without too much development. Cape Cod also has it but is very developed. You can do search here http://www.visitmaine.com/accommodations/house_condo_cottage_rental/. If you are feeling adventurous, take a windjammer cruise.
this is my first time going to hawaii. the trip is going to include me ( age 18), my brother(22), friend(18) and parents(mid 50′s). we are not really on a tight budget, but it can not be really expensive if you know what i mean. we will be in oahu for 3 days, and maui for 4( we have a rental car in maui but not in oahu). i was just wondering if anyone could help me decide what to do. where the good places are to hang out and have fun? we kinda want to see the famous places on both islands, but also we are real nature junkies, so biking and hikes would be nice to do, long hikes would not really matter to us because we are all "so called" athletes( i mean we play sports/run almost every single day). i heard of a famous restaurant, i think it was called "Helena’s", that i wanted to go to. also i heard that there are amazing beaches everywhere on the islands(being from LA, i don’t see too many good looking beaches) so i would like to see some nice beaches. lol. any kind of tip would help.
my parents aren’t real thrill seekers, they just want to relax, but they will join us for the easy activities. but me, my brother, and friend want to try a lot of new things (i.e. snorkel, kayak, surf, bike). also i was wondering how much does it cost to rent these things. also does anyone know of a place where i can rent them for cheap? like a jet skii and one of those things that you ride on thats attached to the back of a jetskii.
also i was wondering if we would be able to go out anywhere into the ocean and snorkel(like are their specific guidelines where we have to snorkel in specific areas), because one of my friends told me about a water inlet where there is coral beneath your feet. i want to go but i’m not sure if it is legal. also i wanted to know if you would need any type of training to snorkel. like is it hard to do, or can you pick it up(learn it) right away?
but the most important thing on this trip is to have fun( and not get bored) and relax and to get out of the everyday grind of school and work. i know i’m asking for a lot, so you don’t have to answer every part of this post, but i really want this trip to be special.any kind of help would be appreciated. just trying to make it memorable for my family.
The main thing is just to not step on the coral, and try to avoid touching it at all.
The approach that works best for me is to go to Snorkel Bob’s (Boss Frog is a competitor on both Oahu and Maui if you want to check out their rates, but I don’t have personal experience with them) and get fitted for gear. Then, when the crowd clears out, I ask the guys that work there, "If you weren’t working today, where would you go snorkeling?" When I followed their advice, I went to Old Airport Beach, north of Lahaina. On that particular day, Old Airport Beach was amazing. There was added excitement when some cops chased someone who had apparently, allegedly hot wired a car onto my part of the beach and threatened to taser their [beep]. But I did see a fabulous quantity and variety of colorful reef fish, including humuhumunukunukuapua’a and puff fish.
The first time I snorkeled–in Hanauma Bay– I did get pretty annoyed with having to pay so much attention to how I breathed. The second and third time I went snorkeling, time passed very quickly! I was snorkeling on Molokai, and there was a member of our party from Michigan who said she’d tried snorkeling once and didn’t like it. She was just treading water when I swam up, took my face out of the water, and said, "You’re missing out!" I put my face back in the water, lifted my head up, and said, "There’s a big turtle right under you." Next time I saw her, she was putting on a snorkel.
When I didn’t follow the advice of the guys in the snorkel shop–when I consulted a guidebook instead–I snorkeled at a popular beach where the water was murky and the fish were not particularly interesting.
You should consider renting a car for at least one day on Oahu. I lived there for four years (and was there just last week on business–I live on Maui these days). When people came to visit me, I usually took them where they wanted to go: Bishop Museum, Pearl Harbor, Arizona Memorial, and so forth. In the end, they usually said their favorite part of the trip was the part where I drove them around Makapu’u, up to Kaneohe to visit Byodo-In Temple in the Valley of the Temples, up to Kualoa Park, up the Windward Side, and down the North Shore. "Just driving around the island."
On Maui, I highly recommend the show ‘ulalena in Lahaina. If you go hiking in the erosion basin in Haleakala National Park, remember to turn around and try hiking uphill before you hike too far down. The thin air means you may be winded quickly, and people react differently to being above 10,000 feet. In my opinion, the four best restaurants on Maui are Cafe O’Lei in Kihei, Mama’s Fish House just outside of Pa’ia, Hali’imaile General Store, and Casanova in Makawao. There is also a Cafe O’Lei at the Maui Lani golf course, which has spectacular scenery and good food.
Bellows Hawaii military rental cabins. Under $80 per night. No a/c and a possibility of bugs and pigeons, but very natural and very close to the most beautiful beaches on Oahu. Cabins are a two minute walk to the ocean. Quiet, natural, breezy,…24 hour super stocked Shopette near cabins and only half hour drive across island to Honolulu and Waikiki beach. Don’t forget to check Hale Koa in Honolulu for a “typical” military vacation site(a/c, restaurants, shopping, nitelife).

I have the most amazingly nice parents ever. On my 21st birthday my parents gave me a 10 day vacation in Maui with my boyfriend. They paid for the flight and set up the accommodations. We have family in Maui and my parents own a place there, so I am pretty familiar with the island, but I’ve never been there without them. We will have a rental car just a few days. We will be staying part of the time in Kaanapali and part of the time in Kahana.
My boyfriend and I have saved up a lot of spending money, but still…Maui is so expensive. We still plan on doing nice things, but I just need to know of some great deals!
I want to show him a good time because he’s never been to Hawaii before.
So I was searching for Booze Cruises in Maui haha. I knew I wouldn’t find as many as I would in say…Honolulu, but come on! They call them "Cocktail Cruises" and they cost twice as much as they would on Oahu (which I expected), but the problem is that they all have like a 3 drink limit and they seem to be geared toward families…
Anybody know of like a normal booze cruise type of trip on maui? I’d prefer it not to be super sketchy. It should leave from Lahaina…
Anybody know of an affordable/reputable snorkel trip we could take to Lana’i?
I doubt I’ll find a deal on a massage, but I’ll ask anyway haha. Anyone know of a reasonable place to get a couple’s massage in the West Maui area?
I’m 21 and he is 22. Any other recommendations for fun things that a young couple could do? We might take a day trip to Hana and maybe a trip to Paia/upcountry. I think I’ll take him to the Maui Ocean Center. I might take him to Wailea, but I seriously have no idea what to do there. I also was thinking I’d take him to Makena Beach. I looked into luaus because I thought I would be kind of fun to do some super cheesey tourist stuff since he’s never been to Hawaii, but the ones I found were WAY overpriced.
So yeah any recommendations for activities that would be fun for a young couple?
Can’t help you on the Booze Cruises on Maui, but you can always take the 3-drink cruise and pick up your boozing back on terra firma. It’s a liability thing…nobody wants to loose any passengers overboard!
As for snorkeling on Kauai…I assume you have reasons for not wanting to snorkel Molokini Island, off of Makena…if you just aren’t aware of, you should definitely look into it! It is arguably the best snorkeling on Maui or Lanai, and possibly the state!
But, if you take the ferry from Lahaina to Lanai, you’ll arrive at Manele Bay. Rent or bring your snorkel gear with you and you can walk to Hulopo’e Beach Park and Hulopo’e Bay. If you’ll go to the southeast end of the sandy beach (left), the snorkeling along the rocky shoreline should make you happy. Caution: Use good judgement if the surf is up, takes ALL the fun out of it and probably puts more excitement in than you need. (Of course, that’s good advice for all of Hawaii’s beaches.)
Then, catch the ferry back in the afternoon and you’ll have saved a car rental, unless you want to check out Lanai while you’re there, of course.
Maui offers the most ziplines of any of the islands, including the longest and the highest…if you’re looking for something different to try.
If you are ready to get away from it all, our Big Island vacation rentals at Kapoho Beach and Waikoloa Village on the magical island of Hawaii are just what you need! At our unique vacation rentals you can experience alfresco living at a tropical estate, snuggle in at a romantic cottage or luxuriate in a private warm pond. Our accommodations provide the perfect spot for relaxation, adventure and the genuine Aloha spirit that has made Hawaii one of the world’s premiere travel destinations.

My boyfriend and I want to rent a small cottage or something for two people in Hawaii. We don’t know which island. We want to just enjoy the quite beaches and maybe go out at nights. Can someone help me find the right island/city and websites to rent a place to stay for 3 to 5 days. Thank you
I’ve used to site below to find a cabin elsewhere in the country, but they sure have a lot of listings for Hawaii. One very convenient feature they have added recently is the ability to narrow down the listings to those that are available between the dates you specify. This shows up when you look at specific neighborhoods on different islands.
To give you an idea of the quiet/nightlife balance, I’ve arranged neighborhoods in a kind of spectrum for you. In that list, Hawaii refers to the island of Hawaii, also called the Big Island.
But on Molokai, for example, you could go to the Kualapuu Cookhouse on Thursday night and watch people come play ukulele, washtub bass, slack-key guitar, and sing, still wearing grease-stained t-shirts from work. Or you could go to the Hotel Molokai on Friday night to see about 12-20 "kupuna" gather to make music. Unfortunately, the Lodge in Maunaloa closed back in 2008, and Paddler’s Inn just closed, and but we are hopeful it will reopen soon.

Okay everyone, so here’s the deal: We are having a wedding in about a month. Hawaii is a large part in our lives as that’s where he proposed when I visited him there when he was in the Navy. I also have been doing Polynesian dancing since I was 7 and I am 25 now.
So what we are doing is a mostly casual thing. Everyone is asked to be casual and comfortable. No gifts either. There will be approx 200 guests including kids. It will all take place in the evening, starting at 5:00pm and it will be dark around 8:00pm that night. It’s all at his parents house in the country on acres and acres.
As guests arrive, the dancers will be greeting them with a lei and kiss on the cheek!
The ceremony is by a fountain and pond. Very pretty. I am wearing a beach wedding dress and he is wearing khaki short and a white button up shirt. The wedding party is in matching fabric dresses for the ladies and shirts for the men. We are all going to wear flip flops. We also decided on no bouquets or anything, instead the ladies are going to hold a glass of champagne and the guys a beer.
After the ceremony, we will start the BBQ buffet immediately since we are taking photos before the event. There will be LOTS of awesome home made food prepared by our awesome families! During this time, there will be Hawaiian/beach themed music playing in the background. About 45min later we will do the speeches and then we will cut the cake. Once that is over, the live band will play for about 15min or so as they cake is passed out before an Authentic Luau is performed! They will be doing dances from Hawaii to Tahiti, including a fire dancer! So it will be very exciting! They also pull some of the guests up for audience participation in the end. That is about a 45min show all together.
We will also have a $1 Tiki Bar. Basically, we are taking care of most the expenses for the bar, all but $1 each. So we are still forking out $2-3 each drink that people buy… There will be things like Jungle Juice, Beer, Mai-Tais, Hurricanes & Coke w/ Rum. Which the Tiki Bar will be open before the ceremony.
After the Luau, we will do the garter and bouquet. This will be around 8pm. I figure most will leave at this time. The band will play during this "transition" time for about an hour as people say bye and all and then we are having an "after party". Just a few hours with no schedule, program or anything. Just so we can actually enjoy the evening, it not go by so fast and really get to visit with some guests. We have quite a few flying in or driving a long ways, and a wedding is not the greatest place for catch up and hang out. I don’t care if only 15 people are there for the "after party" We will have a DJ, the bar and all as well during this time.
Anyway, so I think that’s it. So what I am looking for is some ideas to make sure this is a blast for everyone! I want people to want to stay!
I am getting a piñata for the kids as well as something for them to do, not too sure yet. And someone also mentioned having a volley ball net set up or something…?
We already got all the tiki torches to put everywhere, as well as party lights to hang and there is already a built in fire pit that they have there too! So I was thinking maybe get some stuff to make Smores!
I basically just want a really fun, comfortable and memorable evening! I don’t care about tradition, being fancy or impressing anyone. This is a time to live it up for us before my fiancé gets deployed in a few months.
Thank you all in advance for any ideas!!!
P.S. Please don’t respond with lectures of spending money and all that matters is marrying the one I love and all that. Just so you know, not a lot is being spent. We have a very large family and everyone is pitching in a little to help with the food & drink. I have a very close friend who owns a party rental store, so those are nearly free except for the people to set things up. The band and dancers, I am part of the group and we are all like family… they wouldn’t let me pay a dime if I tried! Again, lots of people are traveling to get there, I want it to be worth it and fun! So please, spare the rudeness and just leave my question alone if that’s all you have to say. That is not what I am asking for. I am asking for ideas to make it more fun, unique or more pleasant!
Awww you all are so sweet. Yeah, sorry it was kinda long, lol. And great advice for the time taken to get through a line. It will be a double sided line of food. And 45min may be enough before speeches start. If not, no biggie. We will also have siblings (there are 14 total) pass out the cake during the Luau. If people arent ready for it, they can just wait. But still, I may add 15 min to each area of time. Thanks again!!!
Have the table cloth on the children’s table be white paper where the kids can color on it. If the kids are having a good time the parents won’t want to leave. Get them bubbles to blow while you are doing your dances, and sparklers for everyone.
You might be surprised, people might stay longer than you think! Most importantly have FUN!
A Video Tour Of The Sunset Beach House, Oahu’s Favorite Vacation Rental Home. Located directly on the sand at exotic Sunset Beach, on the world famous North Shore of Oahu, Hawaii.
My home is directly on the sand at Sunset Beach, on the main island of Oahu, about 1,000 feet down from Pipeline, one of the world’s most famous surfing spots.
The beach in front of my house is gorgeous and is hardly used as there is no public access to it close to my home. The water is crystal clear and the snorkeling is great!
The home has 4 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms and is perfect for parties of up to 8 people with comfort and ease. There is a Jacuzzi on the deck overlooking the beach and my own private volleyball/badminton court is right along side the house, as you can see in the aerial shot on my web page.
The house is only a 7-8 minute drive from the historic whaling town of Haleiwa, which is the main town on the north shore of Oahu. It has lots of restaurants, shopping, a marina (in case you would like to go deep sea fishing), and live entertainment is abundant in many of the restaurants and bars. The Turtle Bay Hilton is about 5 miles away from the house in the other direction, and they have 2 golf courses, horseback riding, and a disco. There is a Foodland supermarket about 1/2 mile from the house. All the island activities, from hang gliding to scuba diving, and polo matches to jet skis are all just minutes away from my house.
For your viewing pleasure the living room has a 46 Flatscreen HDTV featuring all the movie channels with stereo DVD, and there are Flatscreen TV/DVDs in all the bedrooms. The home also has digital security and an electronic safe for your valuables.
In addition to the 3 inside baths there is a hot and cold 2 headed shower at the bottom of the deck which is hidden by foliage, and is everybody’s favorite place to shower and refresh after coming off the beach or after a long soak in the spa.
The kitchen is custom crafted in local island Koa hardwood & has every appliance you can think of, and of course there is a Telephone, High speed DSL Wireless Internet (Wifi), Free Long Distance, iron, and all the other items you would find in your own home.
The water is crystal clear and the snorkeling is great. SCUBA diving is a major attraction on the north shore with both boat and shore dives available. Waimea Falls is only a mile away, and hiking at Waimea Valley is an unforgettable experience.
You won’t have to bring anything but your swimsuit and a smile to have s Great Time!
