Over Spring Break my boyfriend and his family are going to Hawaii for their last family vacation before he moves out for university in the fall, but I am so upset about it. It’s not that I will miss him (even though I will, because he will be gone for two weeks) but it is the fact that he travels a lot and I love to travel but never get to go anywhere. He has been to Hawaii before, he’s been to France, he’s been to Mexico and he’s been on a cruise in the Bahamas. Every time I go to his house they are talking about their hotel plans and car rentals and hanging out on the beach and I can’t help but feel frustrated, bitter and upset. And I know that when he goes, hearing about all of the fun things he gets to do will make me really sad and upset. I am happy that my boyfriend gets to go on an awesome vacation but it is killing me inside that he’s been to so many places and I don’t get to go anywhere, even though that’s all I want to do. What am I supposed to do?
Get a job, save money, and go on your own vacations or pay for yourself to go with them next time. It sounds like a harsh answer but it’s the only one.
I am looking for a small house in Hawaii that I can rent for vacation during the month of June, 2012. I want it to be close to the beach as well as nightlife and places for me to shop and buy food. I am in my 20′s so I want to stay a place that is home to a lot of people my age. There are so many places on the web that I don’t even know where to start looking! I would love advice/guidance from someone who has rented from the place or someone who lives or is familiar with the area..thanks so much!

me and my sister are planning on going to Hawaii after i graduate which is in three years but im going to start putting money on the side to save, but for about a week in summer. How much would tickets cost to fly to Hawaii and back from Dallas. We would also have to have a rental car for the week and probley would just sleep in the car but if we did go to a cheap hotel how much would that be. And then we would eat like off dollar menus and like golden corals. And spend our day at the beach and go to parties and clubs at night. So all in all how much would this trip cost with a two way ticket and rental car and food and gas
You can estimate your current expenses by plugging info in on sites like expedia and orbitz.
However, plane tickets usually aren’t sold more than a year out, and it’s entirely unpredictable what fuel prices, etc. will be in 3 years. Tickets could well be much more expensive then — or perhaps even less. Prices will also vary enormously by what time of year you travel, and even what day of the week and what time of day.
Many car rental places won’t rent to you under 21, so that can matter. And some do even have higher minimum ages, too. You should not plan on sleeping in the car. You generally won’t find any place you can do that legally (or that you’ll even get away with it). However, if you want to save money, you should be using public transport like The Bus instead of a rental car anyway. You’d need to find a cheap hotel. But again, how much that’s going to cost in 3 years is something no one knows nor can fully predict. If the economy comes crashing down, Hawaii could become a very very expensive place to visit — or maybe very very cheap if people living on the island are desperate.
The best you can do is get on the above websites and get a sense what things would cost if you were to come now, then keep monitoring things as time goes on. If you were to come right now, you’d probably be looking at a few hundred dollars each for round trip plane tickets, and then maybe a couple hundred dollars per day to cover food and hotel… and a decent amount more if you’re going out to clubs and buying drinks and all that in the evening.
All in all, you should probably each try to save up a couple thousand (or more), since expenses can vary in the future, and if it’s going to matter this far in advance to you as a trip, it’s better to have too much money for a nice one rather than too little. And it doesn’t hurt to be saving money up even if you don’t spend it all in the future.

My Fiance and I would like to go to Hawaii in September for our honeymoon… but can’t seem to decide which island we should go to. We were decided on Maui but not sure if there is enough to do there that will fill 2 weeks. We like to go sight seeing and will have a rental car (we’re not looking to party or be in an overly crowded area). We don’t want to spend a ton of money on food each day – we would rather spend it on activities. We also love to be on the beach and would love to see dolphins and whales if possible.
Ideally, we would love to visit 2-3 islands but I can’t figure out how to book multiple destinations on Priceline. What island would be best for us? Can you recommend any hotels? Thanks for your help!
My husband and I went to Hawaii in September for our honeymoon too! It’s a great time to go because it’s the slower season – you’ll get better rates on hotels/resorts compared to the winter.
Anyhow, regarding having enough to do on Maui for 2 weeks…
I can say from my own experience that FOR SURE, you’ll have enough to do over 2 weeks… mind you, I guess part of that depends on the kind of sightseeing you like to do… here are some of the things I recommend:
1) check out Iao Valley State Park – the guided hikes from the Hawaii Nature Center are not terribly expensive, and totally worth it. Iao Valley is kind of like a tropical forest, rather than jungle, so it makes for a great change of scenery if you like to do a lot of hiking. Also, there are some botanical gardens there… both the state park ones, and private ones:

2) Haleakala Summit – this is super cool – it’s the summit of a dormant volcano, and it’s seriously like being on the moon up there. On the way up to the summit, there are lots of short trails to some amazing look-outs. And the view from the summit is incredible! A lot of people go up there to witness the sunrise, but if that’s too early for you, or you just want to avoid the traffic, then going later on in the morning is gorgeous too.
3) Driving the Road to Hana – there are tons of places to stop along the way, so if you can, I’d stay one night in Hana before making your way back to the main part of the island. There is some great hiking out this way, and a bamboo forest along the Pipiwai Trail that is incredible. The Pipiwai Trail alone could take up 1/2-1 full day… so you can see how spening a night (or even 2) in Hana is worth considering.
4) Kaeleku Caverns (the Hana Lava Tube) is totally worth a stop on your way to Hana – no bugs, no bats or anything like that – just really cool stuff to see! 
5) You could spend a day exploring UpCountry Maui. There are lots of things to see and do there: a winery, Surfing Goat Dairy, ziplining etc.
6) Another day could be spent driving up to the northwest Kapalua side of the island – can wander around the resort area, shop, hike, explore the beaches etc.
7) Same as number 6, except for the Kaanapali area
Lahaina is a spot that’s great for killing a day too! Lots of cool shops on Front Street, museums, galleries, the Courthouse Square Banyan Tree (I know a tree doesn’t sound that great, but trust me, it’s really cool – it takes up an entire city block!)
9) A helicopter tour of the island is unforgettable – most of the island is only accessible by air, so this is a great way to see the sites!
10) same as number 6, except the Wailea area
11) You can take the ferry to the nearby island of Lanai – a great snorkeling beach is just a short walk from the ferry. (Hulopo‘e Bay)
12) Another great day trip is to check out Molokini crater for the fabulous snorkeling!
13) Check out a luau for sure – the 2 best ones on the island are the Feast at Lele and the Old Lahaina Luau
14) Beach days – there are tons of beautiful beaches on Maui, so be sure to save some time for that too!
Lastly, regarding whales, you won’t see those in September… whale season is from December to April. But you’ll still have a chance to see dolphins, and that can be pretty amazing too!
More things to consider about Maui: one of the things I like best about Maui is the fact that not only are there tons of outdoorsy things to do, but you can come back in the evening to a fabulous dinner at a top notch restaurant too! Or, if you want something less expensive, there are tons of low-key places to choose from too. If you stay in a condo, you can save a bundle by cooking your own meals – there’s a Costco in Kahului, which is great for the savings! (there are grocery stores in the other towns also, but thought I’d mention Costco for sure!)

Real bad, that’s how bad. I was cruisin around Oahu on a Fat Boy. Put 120 miles on it during the day. Was my first time on a Harley. Now I understand all the hype! It will be my next bike. Also, took out a Heritage Softail. Not sure which I like better. Softail is a more comfortable ride, and the higher handlebars (though not quite ape-hanger) do add to the badness factor. This year we’re going to take a special island vacation but we’re having troubles finding the perfect place. Our budget (including airfare, hotel/rental, and car) is around $5000. We were originally wanting to go to Hawaii again but airfare is already so expensive ($800) and is expected to rise this spring. We are looking for a place with amazing beaches, not too touristy or overcrowded, and with great snorkeling. We’re going in late June into early July for 7-10 days, 10 days if there’s more than one island that we’re going to hop to. It’s a family vacation but the youngest is 15 so there aren’t any little kids. I’ve looked into most islands in the Caribbean and haven’t decided against any of them but it’s been hard finding nice places to stay for a slightly reasonable price. Hope this is enough info. Any suggestions? Thanks!

hi i am from Hawaii and am planning a trip during the second week of March to The Bahamas. I am a intermediate diver with a couple years experience spearing grouper and hog, and lobstering, in Miami (i lived there for a few years for college). I am staying at a B&B in Harbour Island for a week and would like input on lobstering and spearfishing.
What I DO know:
- min. 200 yards from shore for spearing
- lobster season still in sesh
- size & bag limits, license at customs entry, etc.
What I DON’T know:
- what part of the island is good (any map ideas? links?!?!)
- would it be better to rent a small boat for a day? is beach entry the way to go? suggestions!
- are the bugs going to be picked over since it’s the last month before season is closed?
If you have any names of boat rentals, fishing spots, etc., I would be really appreciative. Try to keep in mind I am H.I. for 3 full days, so a day trip to Eleuthera would be okay, but not gonna go to Exuma or anything like that.
