I want a vacation for my husband and I but I don’t know the first thing about planning a vacation. We have so many different accomodations we want so it’s hard for me to just look it up. We want something thats all inclusive, adults only (not nude or anything just NO KIDS), and it’s got to be the beach! Hawaii or Mexico or the bahamas. So I thought about going through a travel agency but I don’t know how that works? Do they just book everything and set everything up for you and charge you a fee or what?

Vacations specifically tailored for two people in love. Sheez, I need to get a commission from all these advertising for them. They will be happy to help you out with anything you need.

Ok so I never been to hawaii ever. I planned out a vacation there 2 months from now but I don’t want to get lost or anything soo…I also rented a car and i was wondering if anyone went to any of the maui cruises and drove with a rental there. How does parking work in hawaii? I live in a Metro city so i’m used to meter maids giving out tickets. Is there parking before you embark on a dinner cruise? yea stupid question i know

My son and I went to Maui. From the airport we rented a car. We stayed there for a week. We had the greatest time ever, I strongly suggest that you get the GPS they offer you ( for a cost ). There are little ferries you can take to other islands and other means.
I don’t suggest taking a cruise to Hawaii ( Maui ). I saw how the cruise ships work. They go to all the islands and only spend a few hours on each island. Its surely not nearly enough time to really see the island. I loved Maui. There are so many things to do there. Don’t forget to take " The Road To Hana ". I’m not quite sure what your talking about a dinner cruise though. So, maybe my answer is not what your looking for.

Plan on going September 2007 w/ husband and 2 year old daughter. Never been to Hawaii. Torn between staying in the mountains or right on the beach. Would like something very private. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Taraloha is right. www.kauaiworld.com is a good place to look. I also like www.vrbo.com (vacation rentals by owner). More important than whether to stay in the mountains or beach is how hot do you want it. Kauai can get pretty hot in Sept. Up the hills a bit more is always cooler. Hanalei is nice, cooler (wetter, but Sept is usually not too bad).

Keep in mind, Kauai is really quiet and rural compared to the other large islands. Oahu is nice, and more to do with a child. As long as you don’t stay in Honolulu, and Waikiki. Sunset beach and Turtle Bay are great areas, nice beaches and not so tourist. I live on Kauai and have a three year old and we sometimes have a hard time trying to find things to do. Poipu and Kapaa both have great keiki (kids) beaches. What ever you do, bring lots of bug spray. Mosquitoes can be really bad here.

I am taking my family to the San Juan Islands, Washington. I think we need a vacation rental home, because there are seven of us. The youngest is barely one, so we need some place that is family friendly. Looking at all the web sites doesn’t give great information about how families actually liked staying there. Has anyone stayed in a San Juan Island vacation rental? We are looking at staying by Roche Harbor or Friday Harbor.

We want to go to Oahu November 12-19th, 2008
There will be 4 adults & 3 children. We want to be close or on Waikiki Beach. Preferrably with with a private pool or at least a hot tub that can accomadate all of us. It can be a hotel penthouse or suite, a condo or a vacation home. Any ideas?

The majority of the accommodations in Hawaii are condos with resort amenities. The Resortquest properties are good they have the kids stay, play and eat free program. Some offer 1 & 2 bedrooms with fully equipped kitchens and the majority offer daily breakfast.

how much would it coast to live in hawaii for a year? i mean, inexpensive rental condo, using a bike instead of car, and eating inexpensive foods at home all of the time.
mainly oahu
honolulu..
not being bossy but i would like a flat guestimate. like 2000 a month. something like that

You would need to budget at least $1,000/month for a studio apartment. It would not be especially nice nor in the best neighborhoods. You would have to look around a bit to find one under $1,500, but it could be done. The bus is $2/trip or a bus pass of $40/month. Your electric bill will probably run at least $100/month. Food will be much more than you are used to. Milk will run $5/gal. Bread about $3/loaf (not "good" bread, the cheap stuff). Ground beef will be ~ $3/lb. Cereal will run $5-6/box. It’s hard to get out of the supermaket without spending at least $75.

OK, I’ll bite… between $2,000 & $2,500/month

This is a walk throught of our place vacation rental in Waikiki that I USE to have. It has since been sold. It will sleep four. It has a queen size bed with a sectional sleeper full size bed. Should you have a small child they could sleep on the chase lounge. The condo has Swimming pool and Laundry area. You can check this site out to book it http://www.vrbo.com/168124

I work in a hotel in las vegas as a concierge on one of the 5 star hotel here and I have always do a good job like, im pleasant, I the town pretty well..anyway..we work for tips a lot of people in a hotel, restaurant business work for tips..Being a concierge for 2 years now. I have not ever got a tip more than 5 bucks from the people from UK or European countries.. is that just their culture? oh and the reason why I got my $5.00 is because, i booked a Flight to hawaii for them 5 people and a hotel accomodations for 5 days, made dinner reservations for them for hawaii for 4 nights and on top of that, make dinner reservations for their stay in las vegas nevada and also shows and also deliver flowers. Yes it is part of my job to please them, but, if you ask way too much of a favor you better tip us. we people in this kind of business work for tips.
I usually get $10.00 just by booking dinner reservations and just answering where the bathroom is. I mean not everyone tips but, if I they just asked for my service for 2 hours..and only get $5.00 it really sucks. sometimes i do not get anything at all from them.
thats it i am switching to be a waitress ..We get tons of people from UK and Europe. I am just in the wrong field then.

Well in the U.K and europe the tip is Always included in the bill its common standards there to tip waiters and such are highly respected and so the tips are included in the bill weather the customer likes it or not lol

so they might not realize that their even making a mistake by not tipping you and figuring that the tip is included in the bill

it would be hard to explain to them with out being rude that the tip is not included in the bill but its how you make your living so i would at least try and if they get offended for w/e reason o well right live and learn lol

I’m planning a vacation to Maui, most likely going through Apple Vacations. I’ll be staying at the Aston Ka’anapali Shores. Is Apple Vacations the best way to get flight/hotel/rental car in one place for a great price? Is there any benefit to having the travel agent book through Apple Vacations, rather than just going online and doing it myself? (I checked her rates against the rates I look up myself on the website and they are exactly the same plus the $50 she charges for her service). And are there any other vacation packaging websites similar to Apple? (not Orbitz or Hotwire)
No, I won’t have to look for those things, because Apple vacations is a package vacation deal, it’s what she uses as well. Like I explained, her price quotes are exactly the same (plus $50 for her service) as the Apple Vacations website. The site gives the hotel, flight, and rental car.

It is best to just take the offer with her otherwise you will have to search for hotel, airline ans well as rental car. She has the trouble of looking for all those things for you.

Looking for a good inexpensive rental car or jeep for our honeymoon and would like to know who (rental company) and what (car or jeep) other people have used and had a good experience with.

Should we rent a jeep if we are wanting to travel on rougher roads and trails to get to beaches?

Thanks in advance!

My wife and I went to Kauai for our 20th anniversary. We rented a car from Alamo, but used Priceline. We got a great rate. I don’t think you will need a jeep as most of the beaches are right next to highways. You might want a jeep to explore the Grand Canyon of the Pacific, but you can see most of it from the road, and can hike if you want to see it better. If you have more questions you can ask–we loved it there.

I am looking for a 2 bedroom vacation rental on Oahu for 9 days in December. It doesn’t have to be to fancy just a clean place to sleep. My mother and grandmother are coming to visit so any place that has a local discount would be cool. :)

check www.vrbo.com, very helpful website

Hi there,
My husband and I and another couple (friends) are looking to go to Hawaii in Spring of 2008. They will have a 2 yr old and we will have an almost 1 yr. old. Can someone direct me to some websites that have reasonably priced condos – homes and such in hawaii and also recommend which part of Hawaii we should stay in? Thanks so much!

Aloha,
Your question is a little too open. Every island has something to offer. Oahu is the cheapest place to visit and has the most to do. I’m taking my 3 year old there in June. I want to stay at the Hilton. It is expensive, but they have thier own "mini-zoo", free hula lessons, and cheap craft projects and everything to entertain the kids. There is also a small Children’s museum in Honolulu. You might check out www.vrbo.com (vacation rentals by owner) we have heard of people getting good deals from them. Honestly, housing is pretty expensive here. In the past I’ve found the best prices can be the package deals, you know, air, car and hotel all in one.

Personally we’ve tried to drive around the islands with our daughter, but sometimes it is really hard in the heat. You know in and out of the AC into the humid day. She didn’t handle sitting in the car for hours.

I live on kauai, it is really slow here and most tours don’t allow kids under 5. So don’t plan on any sunset dinner cruises, or snorkel tours. (You’d be surprised how many people try to sign up for a tour with a babe in arms)

I like the idea of taking a cruise. For about $100 per day per person you get all your meals, entertainment and transportation around Hawaii. Some even have babysitters on board (for additional charge) and kids camp, so you can get a little break. New moms usually apprecaite a nice dinner out without the kids.

If that sounds like a lot, remember we are currently paying $3.24 per gallon of gas and up to $8 for a gallon of milk. Prices on the other island aren’t so high. Oh and all the islands now have Costco.

Good luck and have fun

How much would you estimate to stay in Hawaii for 10 days…air fare, condo rental..ect (from houston texas)? I’m not to familiar with the islands to stay on so I’m open for which is best.

Hawaii is generally considered to be one of the most expensive vacation locations in the world.
I’d plan on plane tickets costing from $800-$1200 apiece.
Hotel Room- depends on how close to the beach, but a cheap place will run you $150 a night. Average will be $250 or so, and you can go waaaaay up from there.
Food- expensive, so are drink.
Activities- very expensive.
Rental Car and gas- expensive.
LOL, for 10 days, with plane tickets included, hmmm, I am going to say I’d budget $5000 – $8000 depending on how high class I wanted to go.

Which is better, Maui or the Big Island of Hawaii…. lI’m looking for these "dream vacation" kind of things…

-white, white sands & turquoise water
-safe swimming
-romance/intimacy & beautiful sunsets
-horseback to a waterfall would be nice
-plenty of water activities (surfing, snorkeling, parasailing, kayaking)
-plantations like coffee or pineapple
-four wheeler (quad) tours
-not so busy or crowded (not looking for city stuff)
-accomodations with the classic "hammock out front your door" thing

Any thoughts???

Kauai! That’s where I live and it has all of those things you are looking for! If not, then I guess Maui, but definitely not the Big Island, on the Kona side it is really city-like… we call it kona-fornia ;P and the hilo side isn’t very beachy, there’s lots of rocks and stuff, but that’s where the volcano is, and it’s pretty cool to see that.
But if you do end up going to kauai then some good beaches are Hanalei bay which is on the north shore, or Poipu beach which is on the south shore. For sunsets you’d have to go to the south shore there’s a really nice ‘romantic’ restaurantnt over looking the ocean and you can see the sunset from there. There’s lots of fun activities, horseback riding, atv’ing, zip lining, and there’s this really awesome tour that takes you inner-tubing through the old plantation irrigationion ditches through caves and stuff. Not crowded at all, pretty friendly really green! Some good hotels are Marriott’s Waiohai Beach Club, The Villas at Poipu Kai, Castle Kiahuna Plantation & Beach Bungalows (one of my favorites, right on the beach!)

I hope that helps you :]

Does anyone have any suggestions on where to stay? We are trying to decide between hotel, condo or vacation rental. Also any suggestions on activities is welcomed. There will be me & hubby in our early 30s, My Mom & aunt & Grandma.

First off. You have to try Owner Direct Vacation Rentals. They have nearly 60 vacation rentals in Maui http://www.ownerdirect.com/lodging/usa/hawaii/islandofmaui.htm , so you’re almost guaranteed to find one that suits your needs and your budget.

I’ve been using Owner Direct Vacation Rentals for several years now, and haven’t stayed in a hotel since I found them. Their customer service is fantastic, and they can put you right in touch with the owner of the home, so you’ll know exactly what to expect. It should be really easy to find a place that all 5 of you can stay in comfortably.

As for what to do, there’s lots of opportunities for scuba diving and snorkeling, and just lazing on the beautiful beaches. Maui is smaller and less heavily populated than Oahu (where Honolulu, the capital city is) and is a very relaxing place to visit. It should be easy to find things to do there, and it’s also really easy to get to any of the other islands by just a short plane trip, in case you want to experience Waikiki or Kilauea volcano or something like that.

Have a great time on your trip! I know you’ll enjoy Maui!

Any ideas on how much spending money I should take. Our hotel stay is already paid for. This is our first time going and it’s difficult to get the prices online for things like paddle boat rentals, lounge beach chairs, dinner and so on.

You can spend anywhere from $35 a day (yes for two) and up.
The low end is buying your food and drinks at the grocery stores such as Don Quixote, or The Food Pantry.
A standard hotel breakfast or brunch starts at $10, average is probably $20 for a nicer place, $30 for the be Wailana makes breakfast for $15 for two.
Rentals vary a lot. I hope you’re feeling energetic, a 4-year-old will stop paddling after about 10 minutes (I know from personal experience).
Manoa Falls is good for that age as is The Waikiki Zoo. Aquarium is OK, best for under 6 years old.

I am looking for a vacation rental in the New England area and I want to know the best vacation rental website (a.k.a. has the most selection). Thanks!

Renee

I’m familiar with two mainstream sites, and a couple smaller one-off rental sites (direct from the owners, one listing). Check www.vrbo.com and www.airbedandbreakfast.com

I am Filipino and Portugese. I grew up a city boy from Los Angeles, NYC, to Washington D.C. And everytime I go to Hawaii for vacation, it feels like home. So I have been wondering what the lifestyle is like out there, to live that is, speficially in the countryside (waimanalo, haleiwa, etc)? Because I am really thinking about relocating.

I have only lived in more suburban parts of Oahu, so cannot answer about living in Waimanalo or Haleiwa except to say this: Haleiwa is a long commute if you are working in town. There are, as I am sure you know, large Filipino & Portugese communities in Hawaii, so you will feel very comfortable in terms of ethnicity. One of the things that I personally like best about living in Hawaii is the mix of ethnicities, the different foods & cultures. It makes for a rich & interesting atmosphere. In some aspects, Honolulu is more laid back than a mainland city (folks talk about "Hawaiian time"), but people do need to work hard here to make a living, since it is expensive to live here. I have lived in Honolulu for > 30 years & have seen a lot of folks come & go. It seems like a lot of people come here, but get homesick or find that the cost of living is just too much. They leave sometime during the first 2 years. If folks make it past 2 years, chances are they will be here forever.

Good luck in making the right decision for you.

We are traveling with 3 families. Our parents (70), sister and brother in law (early 30′s) and us ( late 30′s, 18, 14, and 10 years old). We are not sure which island would be best to stay on so that there is something for everyone. Short hikes, waterfalls, and beach are 3 activities that keep coming up…and we don’t know if a resort or a condo/rental house would be the best option. We’d love input from anyone regarding a family friendly vacation and where might be the best place to call "home" for a week.

We live on Oahu (Ewa Beach), and have our sister/brother-in-law and another couple (friends-of-the-family) visit together at least once a year. With our two kids, 13 and 19, we’re in similar circumstances. And as you can imagine, we have lots of other family and friends visiting all the time.

Yours is a huge question, and would require a huge answer. And it depends on a lot of things like your interests, budget, how long you’re here, if you’ve been here before….

That said, here’s what our family and friends do now before they come to visit. We built a personal web page for them just for the questions you’re asking, with the best links and things to do in Hawaii, rated and reviewed. That way they could look BEFORE they got here and see what they want to do. It’s just grown over the last 3 years, and open to everyone. Our 4-star rated items may be a good place to start for those "don’t miss" things. From there, they could see and vote on where to go, even making a rough list of what they want more info about. That helped them and us decide to go the Big Island the second time, then Maui. It’s Kauai next. BTW, the web page initially grew based on things they found and asked about, and we just kept adding and reviewing.

The web site’s at http://home.hawaii.rr.com/gonebananas. Could go into a longer answer here, but with all the work we put into that page, well, you’ll see…it will answer your questions.

Aloha

My boyfriend wants to go to Hawaii for out honeymoon in a few months, but neither of us have ever been or know anyone who has. I want to go to a place that has nice accomodations, but I want there to be lots of natural beauty to go see, and not many people. Is all of Hawaii Crowded from tourist, or are there some places that’s not. Also, are the people nice. Thanks

Oahu = most urban, but quiet parts on north shore.
Kauaii = Most jungle-like. (Filmed Jurassic Park there)
Maui = Middle of the road (think whaling village and condos)
Molokai = Farm community-ish (very low tourism)
Lanai = very small community, (very low tourism)
Big Island = Volcanos

On my first trip years ago, did Kauaii, Oahu, Maui and Hawaii. Always recommend to everyone they do these four, but you need 2 weeks and you will not be rested. This is more of an adventure vacation.

I’m taking my family on vacation to Hawaii this summer. It’s going to be me, the wife, and the brats on Maui for two weeks. Does anybody know of a good place to find vacation rentals online? Thanks!

My family and I recently took a vacation where we rented a house and we used www.vrbo.com (vacation rentals by owner), and we had excellent luck. We ended up with an excellent house at a reasonable price. I just checked their Web site and they have listings for Maui. Good luck!

And why doesn’t the local government do anything about this practice?
When I vacationed there I had my video camera and still camera stolen from my rental car. When the police came to do the police report, they said that a number of cars in the same restaurant were hit that same night. So, we looked around in some pawn shops and saw tons of camera equipment. I know that part is an assumption, but I can’t imagine people vacationing there pawning their cameras for money. And there were just too many there for it to make sense that it was all pawned legally (and not stolen) from those who lived there. The police told us that they had a big problem with locals stealing camera equipment, money, makeup, pretty much anything of value that you might leave in a rental car. They said they would do their best to find who did it, but of course, we never heard anything (and I’m sure never will). Do the Hawaiian people not care more about their own image than to allow this to happen?
in response to the comment of me taking their land (which I don’t get), I was visiting Honolulu. And of course, in case some people do not realize, cities like Honolulu would not be able to survive without the $$$ they receive from tourism. So, please, no more uniformed comments.

It can happen anywhere.

People target tourist because tourists don’t know the area and there stuff is not secure with them most of the time.

It is hard for police to get after these suspects for many reasons.

It can be hard to steal now days. Because now honolulu police has beach patrol (ATV’s) & now a new parks patrol.

Also a little secret new HPD helicopter coming soon.

Hello,

We are staying at the Kaua’i Marriott Resort Kalapaki Beach, 3610 Rice Street Lihue – Kauai, Hawaii in early March. We will not have a rental car. Does anyone have any suggestions for what to do? Is there anywhere we could go to a luau? Thanks!

I lived on Kauai for several years and it is my favorite of the Hawaiian chain. Not having a car will definitely take away from your experience….get one if at all possible. Having said that, I would call the hotel and ask to talk to guest services/concierge , they can be extremely helpful and should answer any questions you have about the island and what’s available. There is a nice beach at the Marriott and Duke’s barefoot bar is a nice spot to enjoy the view of the bay. Kauai also has a pretty good pubic bus service. There are some beautiful beaches….probably it’s main attraction and the . canyon(they call it the little grand canyon)is pretty impressive also . Have a good time and catch some rays some people get so wrapped up trying to do/see everything that they don’t really appreciate what Hawaii is all about…surf and sun!!

I live in a beach condo with my disabled wife and her two service animals. The condo complex is predominately (over 75%) weekly or monthly vacation rentals which are managed by several different management companies.

For the purposes of the law, as it applies to my wife’s service animals, would this complex be considered differently than a condo complex which was primarily occupied by long-term renters and residents? In other words, isn’t it more of a business than a residence and therefor shouldn’t it be governed more by ADA law rather than FHA law?

It depends. It sounds like it is still a residential condominium complex – it just so happens that the owners rent out their units. If the complex was owned by one company and it had mixed used -commercial and residential – the ADA might very well apply. I doubt very much it does in your case.

My husband will be coming home from serving in Iraq and we really want a nice vacation.

It really depends on what you want to do. Each Island offers its own unique draw. The Big Island is unique with huge volcanic mountains and active lava flow, lush tropical forest in Hilo and farming community in Waimea and drier but more developed Kona.

Maui offers a great mountain sunrise, lush forest near Hana, more lavish accommodations, great town in Lahina.

Oahu is full of things to do, the most populated and offers more tourist kinds of things to do. Nightlife, restaurants and shopping are easy to get too, but it lacks the tropical charm unless you stay up on the North Shore at Turtle Bay.

Kauai is just beautiful. You can see the grand canyon of the pacific, the cliffs and awesome tropical vegetation. Poipu beach on the south side of the island is one of the best in the world though.

You can’t really go wrong, it really just depends on what you want to do all day and how much you want to spend. Then you could get some more direct answers.

This summer, my friends and I plan to go to Hawaii for our senior trip. I will still be 17, and all my other friends will be 18. My mom is really persistent in wanting to know everything about me going as a minor. She can’t even ask specific questions though :P

So what can you tell me that I’ll need to have or whatever to be there safely and legally? Can I stay in a rental condo with my 18 year old friends?

p.s. I live in mainland U.S., so it is technically within the country traveling.

~ No problems… however, if you were 15 or younger, you would have to pay about $65 for a Minor’s travel pass… Your parent or guardian would have to be with you till you board the plane… a guardian in Hawaii would have to have name, address, tel…etc and be waiting at the airport for you… you would have to carry a big plastic sign around your neck stating you are a MINOR, traveling unaccompanied… the Stewerdi would have to place you in a front row to help keep an eye on you.

~ But, at 17, I think you’re fine… call your airline first. Just need your ID card… drivers license… what ever you have, ask them if that’s sufficient… may have to get California ID (or state ID).

~ Have an awesome trip ~ Mahalo…

~ Don’t forget your Bible and Devotional…
