I feel like Im going to forget something!! I have two cats, and they are being taken care of for the week.

But what else do I need to do? I have our rental car set up, I made sure our phones would work over there without enoromous charge, I checked when the check-in time was, I have all our stuff ready to pack, I need to go buy cameras….

I feel like Im going to foget something. Are there any checklists for travel to make sure you got everything on the ball before you go?? Im so scatterbrained sometimes and I dont want something forgotten to ruin the vacation!! Any advice???

There are lots of travel checklists on the net. Google "travel checklist" to see.

Really, though, you just need to calm down. If your cats are safe, you have your plane tickets and your hotel reservations, and you know your phone will work there, how much can go wrong? It’s not like you couldn’t buy spare parts on Maui.

Here are some of my personal last minute checks: If you have papers delivered, stop them while you’re gone. What is happening to your mail? (Pickup by cat sitter or held at post office?) If you have a yard, are sprinklers set? Any drugs you need to make sure you refill before going? Do relatives know where you will be so they don’t stress?

Have a lovely time on Maui and don’t worry too much.

through my job I won a 5 day 4 night all expenses paid to anywhere in the U.S. 50 states we chose hawaii I would like to know what single island and hotel we should go to so we can maximize the 5 days. we like beaches, snorkeling and fishing we get a rental car also

Aloha,

I suggest the Island of Maui because the beaches are absolutely beautiful. I’ve personally never had to stay in a hotel on any of the islands because I have family on every island that is inhabitable; but I hear that the Ka’anapali Beach Hotel is really nice.

Although if you are looking for the island that you can do many things–I suggest you go to O’ahu. There is much more nightlife on O’ahu. The Hilton is a really nice hotel and it has its own village of shops and restaurants.

Pretty much all islands are nice as far as beaches go. They all have their own beauty.

Please be courteous to the locals.
I hope you have fun on your trip.

Hi, i’m flying to new york with my bf soon and we can’t afford $300 per night in a hotel, so we are looking at apartment rentals on craigslist. But i’m scared to get scammed. how much can you rely on that?
Have you ever stayed in one? can you recommend something?

Instead of doing that, why not try looking at hotels in other boroughs or even NJ? They’ll be less expensive than a hotel in Manhattan and they’ll be more reliable than booking something through Craigslist. You don’t want to get to NY and find that the apartment you’ve rented doesn’t exist.

I love the beach, so Hawaii is my choice. Beach-golf- and tropical locale. Plus it’s American.

Oh yeah, Hawaii all the way.

Only not as a vacation home, but a permanant place!

My fiancé and I are getting married on May 10th 2008. We are so excited about taking our Honeymoon to Hawaii, since neither of us has been there. We are open to the island we stay at but do NOT want to stay in a hotel. We are looking for a private condo on the beach so we can cook our own food and have the comforts of our “own” home. Something that is nice, yet affordable, our budget will be about $6000 total for maybe 10 days.

Also, we want our condo to be secluded but give us the option to take our rental car to a nice dinner, grocery shop and do fun activities. We want to be able to be in somewhat close proximity to swimming with dolphins, a zip line experience, surf lessons, horseback riding and jet skiing.

So if anyone has any lodging recommendations and activity information I would really appreciate it. Like I mentioned we have no idea where to begin with planning and are hoping we can find the island of our dreams. We are hoping to make this the trip of a lifetime!

The only island where you can be sure to be able to swim with dolphins is Oahu. (They also offer it on the Big Island of Hawaii, but not everyone who wants to do it there can get a turn.) But Oahu is the most crowded island by far.

A private condo on a beach is going to be very expensive. Most great beach property is taken up by big resort hotels or big not-very-private condos.

I suggest Maui as the best island. It is not as crowded as Oahu, and there is a lot more to do than on Kauai or the Big Island of Hawaii. There are two zip lines, several horseback riding places (including one that can take you into Haleakala crater on horseback), surf lessons and jet skiing (though no swimming with dolphins on Maui).

My boyfriend and I are planning to take a vacation in November for my birthday. This is going to be our first vacation neither of us has ever had one and we both work very hard and are in dire need of one. What island would you guys recommend for the month of November where the weather is nice and warm? I also want to go to a place where it’s not super crowded with families seeing as its only us two. I was thinking of Maui, however I have heard that u will really need a rental car if you want to have fun in Hawaii is this true? Since this is our first time traveling I don’t want to go all fancy smancy .. I just want a nice romantic getaway! Please any help with ur suggestions on saving money and where to go or your experiences would be really- really appreciated!! THANK YOU 

You might try Kauai for a nice get away Kauai’s Coconut Marketplace area has a few shops but is also quiet and centraly located.

http://www.govisithawaii.com/ good all Islands info.

May you recommend a few bargain rentals?
My buddies and I started a few weeks ago with long boards (mostly Manhattan Beach, CA). Web shows Makapuu Beach or Ehukai for all surfers.

Yes, we’re newbs. No "pipes" or north shore, Oahu for us.

THANKS!

totally agree ^

and theres this little shop on kam highway right after foodland if your coming from haleiwa. right before if your coming from kahuku. it’s like $5 for the first hoiur and 3.50 every hour after.

Are there any luxury vacation house rentals on the east coast available to adults under the age of 25 that are actually nice beachfront houses? Like are there any available to us with like 6+ bedrooms and bathrooms? I’m tired of taking dives just because we’re under the age of 25.

You may be tired of taking dives because of your age, but landlords are tired of taking kids under 25 who want to trash their luxury home.

Now, this may not describe you and your friends, but, the majority of those under 25 renting homes for a vacation or spring break do not take care of the place like they should.

Hi, we are coming to Hawaii next year — right after christmas so like december 08 – january 09.. its either going to be honolulu or maui.. it depends on which PGA tournament my uncle (on the tour) gets us tickets too. We have come in the past and stayed in resorts but there is going to be more of us this year and my dad wants to just start searching around and getting prices for renting homes for a week or two. Anyone know of any sites online where we can look? Prefer not Resort Quest. Thanks :)

hey, check out this site. there are lots of different places for both maui and oahu. it changes everyday.

I’ve been reading up about the science of investment in real estate; specifically condos, vacation rentals. I have met some very wealthy real estate agents in Hawaii and some others that make a decent income like 40k a year.

If I want to become a real estate invester, will it help if I become a real estate agent, broker, etc.
Please, I’m still young and am eager to learn from you the experienced.

Any added expertise will help an investor of any kind. Realtors have an advantage because they tend to know the laws regarding real estate, but more importantly they know their market and have access to information not readily available to Joe Blow investor. They are usually members of the local board of realtors and have access to the MLS which offers knowledge of present and past sales and the market trends of neighborhoods. You might not need to get a real estate license to be a good investor, but simply to find a good Realtor who knows the business who can guide you through it and advise you on good opportunities.

A bit about the couple:

We’re ages 30 and 32, we’ve been in a very committed relationship for almost 14 years (we met when I was 16, he 18).No kids/no pets, we both work full time Mon-Fri 9-5 jobs. He makes more money than I do, about $48k and I make about $31k.

Background for the question:

He has credit card debt (I’d say now it’s about $9,000 down from $15,000 after consolidation). Sometime some time around April/May, I helped him by looking into debt consolidation and enrolled him in a program to pay of his debt without effecting his good credit. We both live paycheck to paycheck because I make "just enough" and he has debt to take care of. However, we’re not that stretched because we manage to do something fun every weekend (bbq’s, outings with friends, camping trips etc.).I’m the "planner" in the relationship, he can plan too, but is much more last minute when it comes to those things although he was very good about our trip to Hawaii two years ago. Just FYI, we paid 80% cash for that trip. We saved up for it all year long. There were somethings we had to put on his credit card, but it sure as hell wasn’t $15,000! Just a side note to consider.

Details of the question:

So, I am trying to plan a vacation for 2010 (around April or May). It’s either to go back to Hawaii or on a cruise for 7-9 days. We have a family member in the airline business that can us on the plane to Maui for free/next to nothing. I found a bungalow for $80 a night and car rental is $30 a day. VERY CHEAP for Hana, Maui. For the cruise, it’s $1100 for both of us to the Caribbean (he’s never been on a cruise) and it’s all expenses paid for except alcohol and shopping. We can pay a deposit of $500 and pay off the cruise over the course of the year. Everytime I try to talk to him about planning a vacation for next year, he gets bugged about it, says we can’t afford, we’ll talk about it later and continues to put me off. I’m trying to plan in advance to make him feel more comfortable about the money (paying it off over time, paying in cash vs. credit, etc.) and that way we have plenty of time to make the best arrangements, scheduled time off and what not. NO RUSH. He hates to be rushed! Okay, so I’m trying to work with him. I can’t find a common ground. He’s an amazing guy (that’s why I’m still with him ;o) But I don’t how to handle this. I’ve got a bug to "see and do" and he feels like he can’t do anything. He needs to FIND A WAY.

You are earning about $80,000.00 per year. It sure sounds like you can manage a vacation every few years, if not more. You sure sound like you have a head on your shoulders and have the finances under control.
Go for it!!!! Sit him down and tell him how you have earned the vacation and show him on paper. Both your choices are wonderful…. Both will be a great time and since he has never been on a cruise why not try it. The price you have is fantastic..
Go for it !!!!!.

A friend and I are looking to open a Jet ski rental business in either Miami, Florida or Honolulu, Hawaii. My question is are there Marinas or areas that we could rent from along the Beach without paying a lease, and if not, how might we go about finding land along the beach to Lease and operate from.

THANKS

Please talk to other business owners. Renting jet skis is a risky business. Your renters will not have any experience or skill to operate them. You have to secure your investment in the jet ski. Few renters can put up such security. Maintenance costs will be high. I suggest you consider other endeavors. If you must try this business, develop a spread sheet and calculate costs and prices necessary to cover costs and provide a profit.

Spring break for us is the first full week of April and I would love to vacation in Florida, however my budget is tight. I’m looking for something clean, within a few miles of the beach. An efficiency, cabin, condo or small home that can sleep 3 (my husband, my 10 yr old, and myself… no wild teens!) would be perfect. I’ve searched the web for vacation rentals, but I have no idea what sites are the best or how to find the best prices. Any advice would be appreciated!

Hi! Check out this place!! http://www.capesanblasinn.com/ourrooms.cfm
I believe the Coquina Shell Room and the Turtle Shell Suite would accommodate your family size…
My gf & I stayed here on Spring Break in 2004. Completely quiet–40 miles south of Panama City (i.e. NO crazies). Gulf-side beach is literally across the street. The breakfast’s there were freakin’ outstanding!! Hope the same woman is still managing it. I very HIGHLY recommend it!!

It appears that I can pay the fine while I am here, but can I take traffic school to wipe it from my insurance record when I get back home to California?

yes

We would like a three- or four-star hotel that has a sandy beach on the Kona coast of the big island.

I’d prefer it walking distance from town, although we will have a rental car. I just like to walk when possible!

The main things we want are a hotel (not a condo), a sandy beach, a good restaurant or two on-site or nearby, and good ocean views.

Many of the properties on the Internet seem to be condos, and we prefer a hotel.

Mahalo!

you are not going to find any hotel within walking distance of Kona Village with a sandy beach. The only hotel I am aware of that has a sandy beach is the Mauna Kea about 15-20 minutes away from the village. It’s a man made beach and very big but I heard the hotel was still closed from the earthquake. I could be completely wrong on that but you should check it out first of course.

Sorry but there are very few sandy beaches, especially large ones, on the Kona coast. Most of the big island’s coast is volcanic rock.

My 2 1/2 yr old son’s father and I are not together. I have physical custody of our son. WE both have joint LEGAL custody!
Im planning a trip with my now fiance and my son to go to Disneyland this summer. We live in Hawaii. Ive avised my sons father of this trip over a month and half ago. He told me at that time it is FINE for me to take him, he trusts me and it sounds very very fun! I have documentation of this via text message me sent me to my phone.
Noiw he’s trying to tell me that I cannot take our son on vacation to Disneyland without his concent. This was NOT discussed at the court hearing. The reason why is because he, and his parents want to take my son on vacation in September to San Francisco. None of them are residents of the US. He is a resident of the Philipines. I am very nervous for him to take our son on vacation out of state, because of this main reason. I feel he may try to take our son and I will never see him again! Also, my sons father cannot even properly put a car seat in a car. He goes on vacations all the time, at least once a month. He acts as if he cannot pay child support, but as stated before is on vacation all the time! When he goes on these vacations, he does not check on our son, or anything. He will go sometimes 2 weeks without even coming to see him, or call him. This is not acts of a responsible parent! Whenever my son is left in his care, I call AT LEAST 2 times a DAY!

I need to know what exactly I can do at this point, since Ive already booked the hotels, and other accomodations for this vacation. Should I try to seem legal advise? Or go to the courts? Is this even valid? He is the type that threattens me ALL the time he’s going to take me to court for things. CONSTANTLY! So, I feel like he is wasting the courts time. Whenever he doesnt get the answer he wants, he goes to the courts, and seeks Legal Aide. Im the one struggling and I cannot even get Legal Aide because its a conflict of Interest now!
I end up having to request off work and this ALWAYS happens! Please can someone help me?

Since you have proof that he agreed to this, take your son on vacation. If his father stirs up trouble about it, remember he’s skating on thin ice and you have the blow torch.

How expensive is Maui? If you want a vacation rental condominium ( up to four people), visit the Brase/Brase statistics site at math.college.hmco.com/students, find the link to Maui, and then search for accommodations. The Maui News gave the following costs in dollar per day for a random sample of condominiums located throughout the island of Maui. 89, 50, 68, 60, 375, 55, 500, 71, 40, 350, 60, 50, 250, 45, 45,125, 235, 65, 60, 130. If you were a travel agent, and a client asked about the daily cost of renting condominium on Maui, what average would you use?

Probably the mode, 60, since the 500 will raise the mean too much and it looks like the median is higher than 60 as well.

I am a Japanese football fan.
Next week I am going to stay in Hawaii and go to Aloha stadium to watch Hawaii Bowl.
It’s my first time to go to the big bowl game. So I can’t imagine how terrible the traffic condition is on bowl game day.
Pls advise to me when I should leave my hotel on Waikiki beach to go to stadium by car (rental car). Can I park around the stadium? Is stadium parking capacity enough to 30000 audience?

I appreciate very much if you advise anything to me!

You will probably want to give your self at least 1 1/2 hours to 2 hours to get there. The H-1 is always bad, but on game day the 201 and 78 are just as bad as the H-1 during rush hour. And, parking is easy you may have to walk a little bit, but the game is worth it.
Enjoy, Aloha

I need to find a vacation rental like a condo, or townhome that is under 800$/ Week that is nice and by the beach. I dont mind if its in Vancouver or Victoria BC, or in Washington or Oregon…I want it by the beach though and i am staying a week!

hmmmm. thats a challenge. i’m a travel agent…… lets see…i found several hotels in vancouver for under $700 a week(3 star)and other ones up above $100 a night, and some less than that, but 2 stars. if you wanna give me an email at trussvilletravel@yahoo.com i’d be happy to help you, or you can visit me website, trussvilletravel.com . we have a low price guarantee. i hope i can help you, and have fun!

It’s hella cold here in Calfornia. Any remedy for a relative visiting from the warm Pacific?

I can go back home, but not until January 2nd.

Poor baby! I can appreciate the dilemna — you’re freezing, but then again, with the price of heating oil these days, you can’t really ask them to hike up the heat.

Here are some suggestions:
Buy an electric blanket, and snuggle with it in the living room or the bedroom, then give it to them as a gift when you go back to Hawaii.

Find a cute blanket that will double as a shawl, and again, give it to your hostess when you leave.

I’m not sure if you can find these in California, but you can get little chemical packs that warm up when you rub them. Put them in your hoodie pocket, and it will warm up your belly, and your hands when you put them in the pocket.

Ask to borrow some sweaters/jackets. They’ll laugh, but at least you won’t be crying! Borrow extra blankets for the bed.

Get a fabric bag and some rice or beans (uncooked). Put them in the fabric bag, and microwave it for about 5 minutes. They will retain heat for a long time, and it’ll be a great warmer-up — especially at bed time.

Exercise.

Drink hot liquids. Spicy stuff might be helpful too. Chili is one of the best warmer-uppers I know.

Hope that helps!
