My friends and I are going to Oahu. We are all set with accomodations, we rented a condo and split the cost. I’m just wondering how much to bring for food costs. Is dining out in Hawaii more expensive? What is the sales tax in Hawaii right now? We also want surfing lessons, what is a reasonable price? And if anyone knows of any fun attractions and activities, please let me know. Thanks!
Well if your going to Hawai’i on vacation you shouldn’t be thinking about saving money because it’s not possible. The cost of living here is ridiculous enough, but as a haole(tourist) it’s even worst. I am just guessing that your staying in Waikiki, so a meal at Mcdonalds there is $7.80 compared to $4.50 in the states. Surf lessons are all along the Waikiki beach line at the surf stand that you can’t miss. The cost is $50 for a 1 1/2 hour lesson. Reason I know this is my husband use to work on the beach at the surf stands. That’s as reasonable as it gets. I know it probably hard to deal with but Hawai’i is not a cheap place to visit or live. There are a lot of things to do in Hawai’i! Hiking up Diamond Head, Snorkeling at Hanauma Bay, and around the Island drives when the sun sets. The only way to enjoy yourself to the fullest is not worry about the spending. Good luck to you and much Aloha.
I am planning a trip to Maui for my whole family (10-15 ppl)
Question is;
1. Which area is good for vacation rental, Kapalua or Wailea? and why?
2. For vacation rental home, is there anything I should be cautious about, check, should not miss?
Hi there! You’ll definitely have a good time on Maui.
1) I’d recommend Wailea. No particular reason… just that I’ve been there, and haven’t really visited Kapalua much…
2) I’ve been using Owner Direct Vacation Rentals for more than 5 years now, and they’re great. Never had a problem with them. They have a few vacation rentals in Wailea http://www.ownerdirect.com/accommodations/wailea.htm so you should check them out.
It’s nice to see someone talking about vacation rentals instead of hotels… I can’t see staying in a hotel ever again, since I found out about vacation rentals.
What to check for:
- Since you’re travelling with such a large group, make sure there are enough bedrooms! If not, make sure the owner knows about the numbers, in case they’re not comforatble with that many.
- find out if there are any cleaning fees
- do they have washer/dryer etc?
- any children?
- any pets?
- smoking allowed?
When you call up Owner Direct, their customer service will give you any more information you want. You can feel free to ask them any questions you have too. They’re the best customer service I’ve ever dealt with.
Have a great time on your trip!
If you recommend vacation packages, any tips on sources for great deals you’ve gotten in the past for Kauai?
If you recommend booking things separately for Kauai, any tips on that? Gotten great deals on condos and/or car rentals? Also any bad experiences with condos and car rentals that i should avoid?
What about booking travel agents?
Robert’s overnighter’s- rooms/car/airfare & different combinations. That’s what many of the locals do.Airfare/rooms get a discount. Rooms /car get a discount. you can still go independently wherever you want & also book some tours on the side.Robert’s of Hawaii is the name of the company. I’ve used them at least 100 times. So the answer to your question is…I reccommend room/car/air packages but choose carefully if you decide to book tours with 15 people in a van, but sometimes that is a better option because the tour guides are top nltch 7 thy cook you BBQ lunch & they know places you will never find, but Kauai is a very small island, you can go exploring. A must is a 2.5 mile hike to Hanakapiai, at the end of the road at the wet caves take a short 2,5 mile hike. This is part of an 11 mile hike which you would need a 40 lb. pack & stayin for a week. That was one of the best vacations of my life!
We are planning to take a vacation in summer in Florida. thinking to stay in a vacation rentals. 5 ppls: me, my husband, 15 months girl and my parents. The first family is spending the holiday in Hawaii, staying at a vacation home that costs $4,000 a night. Are the taxpayers paying for this?
The same people who paid for ALL of the last President’s vacations.
Come to think of it, the same people who are still paying for his dismal presidency too.
